Shamanic Healing

Shamanic Healing

The shamanic healing process may often begin with brief discussion between the Shaman and client as to the client's particular concerns and a specific purpose for the healing session may be formed and expressed. The next stage is for the creation by the Shaman of sacred space in which the healing can take place. The Shaman will invite in the entities and beings from the spirit world that can assist with the healing process and seek their guidance and direction.

After this, the shamanic healing process proceeds intuitively with no set form. A shamanic healer may use drum beat and chant to set the correct vibrations for healing; he may sing the song of a particular animal or other manifestation of nature that has been indicated as beneficial for the client; and he may call forth particular colours or energy patterns to assist. With permission of the client, hands on healing or manipulation of affected areas of the body may also occur. Physical objects from nature, such as stones, gems, crystals and the like are also used.

In due course the shamanic healing process will draw to a close and the Shaman will give thanks for the assistance rendered from spirit and return the sacred space to the mundane before ending the healing session.

Healing and Connection

The common thread in all shamanic healing work is reconnection with our soul, and the bringing forward and energising of our true self.

In our society, re-establishing this connection is central to the work I do. It is not uncommon for clients in their first healing sessions to experience strong emotions as they connect again with their soul world that their day to day life obscures. It is our disconnection from spirit that causes so much of our personal unhappiness; our disconnection from nature that causes so much pollution and ugliness in our environment; and our disconnection with our community that brings about loneliness, despair and even violence.

The work of a shaman is to facilitate connection between the world of spirit on the one hand and us as physical and spiritual beings on the other; to reinvigorate our connection to the natural world to bring about harmony in our environment; and to assist us to stay connected with our true community with feelings of compassion and love.

Outcomes for Clients

Outcomes for clients can really be described on two levels.

Ritual Alter

The first level is the effect of the shamanic healing process on the client during the healing session and immediately afterwards. Clients have greatly varying experiences, varying both in their nature and their intensity. Experiences can vary from intense emotions, to the feeling of energy shifting and changing within your body, to simple feelings of relaxation and wellbeing.

The second level is the longer term and more permanent healing that can occur. At this level the client is integrating into their day to day life the changes that have taken place during their healing sessions. Over time, the client may notice that their experience of life has changed, and that the causes of their dis-ease, ill health, unhappiness or sense of a lack of wholeness have faded or have been removed. This is the long term healing and change that can come about as a result of the shamanic healing process.

On either level the depth of the healing that occurs depends on the readiness of the client. Typically the first few healing sessions may assist the client to adjust to the shamanic healing process and to go deeper into their soul world where the causes of their complaint lies. As the client's commitment and openness grows the shaman will be able to work at a deeper and more fundamental level which, in turn, will provide the client with the opportunity for profound change in their life and for deep healing of their wounded soul.
